“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these
things!” Galatians 5:22-23 NLT
Or spiritual growth is a continuous process. Each virtue builds
upon the previous one, leading to a well-rounded and mature
Christian character.
Let us delve into one of these virtues; self-control or temperance.
Webster’s Dictionary defines it as “a restraint exercised over
one's own impulses, emotions or desires.
”It is identified in the Bible as a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians
5:22-23) and the ability to govern one's desires and impulses.
We must develop this discipline and restraint as identified with
comparisons in Proverbs16:32, “He who is slow to anger is better
than a warrior, and he who controls his temper is greater than
one who captures a city and then again in Proverbs 25:28, “A
person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.”
Self-control is the expression of the Holy Spirit's work within a
person, giving them the ability to live a disciplined life that bears
fruit of their faith.
